IT WAS A FEW DAYS BEFORE Kara and I were going to present our projects at the symposium when Karaâs dad agreed I could come over for dinner.
I knew from Karaâs shyness when she told me the news it was no small thing. So I decided that I should do something special. I wasnât really sure what that would entail, but just like any good idea, I was able to turn to the Internet for help. It always works wonders, especially the day before.
I decided that since Karaâs family was going to make dinner, and we were apparently going to eat at her house rather than eating out (after being raised by my parents, I thought that was more than a little weird; the only thing my parents could cook without burning down the house seemed to be spaghetti), I decided that I would make dessert.
Some selfish part of me decided it would be best to make sure I baked something I liked, in case they didnât make anything that I would like. That way, I had something to look forward to after choking down whatever they made.
It didnât take long for me to find too many pictures of perfect-looking food on my social media. I had enough people who liked to share all those âmake this perfect foodâ videos that sped through all the steps so it looked even easier than it was.
I settle on making a pie, because I figured it would be pretty easy. I mean, itâs crust, itâs fruit, and then it goes into the oven.
After the soccer match on Saturday was over, I stopped off at the store and picked up those insta-cinnamon rolls for the crust, a bunch of different apples, and just for a touch of the exotic, I picked up some pineapple. I figured since Kara liked happy colors, she would appreciate my selection.
As I came home, Dad was in his home office, working on whatever he was working on (he could have been playing video games for all I knew), and Mom was out doing some vendor event for her business. I could hear Johnathan in his room as he practiced his violin. It was getting close to the winter holiday concerts for the school, and I knew with the end of the boysâ soccer season, he was booked solid for the rest of the school year thanks to the schoolâs wind ensemble and orchestra events.
I didnât mind. I figured that my family was busy with their own things, and that actually worked in my favor.
When you have the Internet, thereâs a lot you donât need your parents for.
I soon discovered itâs best to have your parents anyway, when I tried to turn on the oven and ended up turning on the stove instead. The gas flame popped up quicker than Iâd realized and snagged onto the grocery bag.
âAugh!â I jumped back, and then I leapt forward, trying to scoot the bag out of the flameâs way. It was only after I singed my fingers that I realized I needed to shut off the burner.
